Yesterday, Helsinki Baltic Herring Fair was opened in Kauppatori, Market Square, and it will be there until next Saturday, on 9th. This market, oldest in Helsinki, is celebrated every year since 1743.
Fishermen sell their herring products and other stuff, like jam and juice berry or potatoe and black bread, on their own boats or in small wooden shops on the docks, in the same Market Square or around Wanha Kauppahalli (Old Market Hall)
Also, there are a lot of places to get some lunch, one of them is the next boat:
In the openning yesterday, there were performances, concerts and herring contest. The masters of ceremony were Sami Garam and Janne Pekkala, both of them are famous local cooks. There was a great atmosphere as it can be seen in the next pictures.
We bought some traditional products as berry jam, bread and several kinds of herring. We have tasted some of them and they are delicious!
To be honest, I think that I have never tried herrings.
